Galt János, angol humorista, szül. Irvineban (Ayrshire) 1776 május 2., megh. greenockban 1839 ápr. 11. Eleinte kereskedő volt, 1809-11-ig Olaszországban és Törökországban, majd Gibraltárban járt s azután mint a kanadai társulat ügynöke Amerikába ment. Művei: Life and administration of Cardinal Wolsey (1812); Life and studies of Benj. West (1820); Life of Byron (1831); Autobiography (1833, 2 köt.); Poems (1833); irt 4 szomorujátékot, történelmi-romantikus elbeszéléseket is, de leginkább a humorisztikus novellákban tünt ki. Ilyenek: Annals of the parish (1821); Ayrshire legatees (1820); Lawrie Todd (1829); The prevost, stb. Műveinek gyüjteménye: Works 1868. (London, 4 köt.) jelent meg.
