Whittier János Greenleaf, északamerikai költő (általánosan queker-poétának hivják), szül. Haverhillben (Massachusetts) 1807 dec. 17. Néhány éven át szerkesztette a Pennsylvanian Freeman c. abolicionisztikus lapot. 1840. visszavonult Arnesburybe. Művei: Mogg megone (Boston 1836); poems (u. o.); Songs of labor and other poems (u. o. 1850); The chapel of the termits (u. o. 1853); Home ballads (u. o. 1859); National lyrics (u. o. 1865); Snow-Bound (u. o. 1866); Ballads of New-England (u. o. 1869); The Pennsylvania pilgrim (1872); The vision of Echard (1878); The Hing's missive, and other poems (1881); Poems of nature (1885); St. Gregory's guest. Összegyüjtött művei: Poetical works (1857). Újabb gyüjtemény (1876). Összes műveinek utolsó kiadása 7 kötet (1889). V. ö. Kennedy S., Life, genius, and writings of J. G. W.
