Whitman
Whitman (ejtsd: wittmen) Walt, északamerikai költő, szül. West Hillsten (Long Island) 1819 máj. 31., megh. Camdenben (Philadelphia mellett) 1892 márc. 27. Előbb könyvnyomdász volt, azután több lap munkatársa, egy ideig miniszteri hivatalnok is. Nevezetesebb munkái: Leaves of grass (1855); Drum taps (1865); My captain, memoranda during the war (1867); Democratic vistas (1870). Összegyüjtött költészeti művei: Leaves of grass (Philadelphia 1886). Összegyüjtött prózai munkái; Specimen days and collect (1882-83). V. ö. Bucke, W. W. (Philadelphia 1883); Knortz, W. W. (New-York 1886); Vasárnapi Újság (1874, 396. old.).
