Whewell
Whewell (ejtsd: júel) Vilmos, angol tudós, szül. Lancasterben 1794 máj. 24., megh. Cabridgeben 1866 márc. 6. Tanulmányait Cambridgeben végezte, azután pedig u. o. a matematika tanárává lett. 1828. a mineralogia tanszékét nyerte el, melyről azonban 1833. lemondott. 1838. mint a morál-filozofia tanárát az egyetemre hivták, 1841. pedig a Trinity-College főnöke (master), majd végül 1855. az egyetem helyettes kancellárja lett. Igen sokoldalu ember volt, mit leginkább az bizonyít, hogy számos fizikai, filozofiai, mineralogiai nemzetgazdasági és más tudományos iratain kivül a Goethe-féle Hermann und Dorotheát is angolra fordította. Tudományos munkái közül csak ezeket említjük: Mechanical Euclid (6. kiad., 1843); Astronomy and general physics, considered in reference to natural philosophy (London 1834, 2. kiad. 1864); Histoy of the inductive sciences (3 köt., u. o. 1837); Philosophy of the inductive sciences (2 köt., u. o. 1840), melylyel Kant filozofiáját terjesztette hazájában; History of scientific ideas (3. kiad. 2 köt., u. o. 1858-61); Elements of morality, including polity (u. o. 1845); Lectures on systemati morality (u. u. 1846); Lectures on the history of moral philosophy in England (u. o. 1852); On Ricardo's principles of political economy (1833) stb.
