Symmer Róbert, angol fizikus, születési éve, valamint helye is ismeretlen; életéről általán keveset tudunk. 1753 óta a Royal Society tagja volt és 1763 jun. 19. halt meg. Tudományos működése az elektromosságról szóló tan terére esik. Munkái közül a következő címüeket említjük: Of the electricity of the human body stb.; Of the electricity of black and white silk; Of the electrical cohesion; Of two distinct powers in electricity (Phil. Tans. 1759). Tőle való a S.-féle hipotézis (l. o.).
