Ruskin
Ruskin (ejtsd: röszkin) János, angol műkritikus, szül. Londonban 1819 febr. Oxfordban tanult s kizárólag művészettörténelmi tanulmányainak élt. Műkritikusi pályáját egy kis könyvvel kezdte, amelyben Turnert és a modern angol tájképfestést védelmezte és amelyet aztán hosszas olaszországi tartózkodása után Modern painters c. (1843-60, 5 köt., 2. kiad. 1873) terjedelmes kötetévé szélesített ki. Egyéb munkái: Pre-Raphaelitism (1851); Stones of Venice (illusztrációkkal, 1851-53, 3 köt. 2. kiad.; magyarul Velence kövei, ford. Geőcze Sarolta, Budapest 1896); On the nature of Gothic architecture (1854); Lectures on architecture and painting (1854); The political economy of art (1857, 2. kiad. 1867); The elements of perspective (1859); Notes on the Turner Gallery at Marlborough House 1856 (1857 s azóta többször) stb. Az oxfordi egyetemre a szépművészetek tanárává neveztetvén ki, a következő szépművészeti munkákat irta: Lectures on art (2. kiad. 1875); Aratra Pentelici: six lectures on the elements of sculpture (1870); Ariadne Florentina: six lectures on wood and metal engraving (1873). Néhány év óta R. visszavonultan él Lancashireban. (V. ö. John R., a bibliographical biography, London 1879; Mather, Life and teaching of J. R., 2. kiad. u. o. 1884.) Mint szociálpolitikus is nagy hirre tet szert; Carlyle nyomán az erkölcsi elvek érvényesülését követeli a nemzetgazdaságtanban.
