Oliphant
Oliphant (ejtsd: ollifent). 1. Lőrinc, angol iró, utazó és diplomata, szül Londonban 1829., megh. Twikenhamban 1888 dec. 23. Nagy utazásokat tett (Cejlonba, majd 1850. Nepalba, 1852. Oroszországba), később Elgin lord kanadai kormányzónak magántitkára lett, s mint ilyen működött a keleti hábouig, melyet Omer pasa táborában nézett végig. Khínát is meglátogatta, majd 1861. diplomáciai ügyvívő lett Japánban, ahol orgyilkosok megtámadták és súlyosan megsebesítették. 1865. beválasztották a parlamentbe, 1872 óta egy farmon lakott Long-Islandban, New-York közelében. Fent említett utazásairól nagyon alapos és érdekes könyvekben számolt be, nevezetesen: Journey to Katmandu (London 1852); The Russian shores of the Black sea (u. o. 1853); minesota (u. o. 1855); Caucasian campaign of Omer Pasha (u. o. 1856); Narrative of teh Earl of Elgins mission to China and Japan (u. o. 1860, 2 köt.); On the present state of political parties in America (1866); Piccadilly (1870); The Land of Gilead (1880); The Land of Khemi (1882); Haifa, life in modern Palestine (1887). 2. O. Margit, angol regényirónő, szül. Liverpoolban 1818. egy Wilson nevü skót családból. Már 1842. magára vonta a közfigyelmet egy regényével: Passages in the life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland, melyet gyors egymásutánban követtek nagy népszerüségre jutott regényei, különösen: Merkland (1851); Charles Fild (történet a puritánok világából, u. a.); Adam Greene (1852); The chronicles of Carlingford (1863-66); Agnes (1866); Squire Arden (1871); Innocent (1873); Carita (1877); The ladies Lindores (1883); Olivers Bride (1886).
