Gaskell (ejtsd: geszkel) Erzsébet Cleghorn, leánynéven Stevenson, angol irónő, szül. 1822., megh. Manchesterben 1865 nov. 15. mint G. Vilmos unitárius lelkész felesége. Regényeit és novelláit kitünő leirás és jellemzés teszik becsesekké. Ilyenek: Morland Cottage (1850); Ruth (1853) Lizzie Leigh (1854); Cranford (1855); North and South (1855); Mylady ludlow (1859); Right at last névtelenül, (1868); Silvia's lovers (1863); Domestic stories (1864); Cousin Phillis (1865); Wives and daughters (1866). Egyéb művei: The life of Charlotte Bronte (1857, 2 köt., 5. kiad. 1859). Összegyüjtött művei: Novels and tales cimmel 8 kötetben jelentek meg. V. ö. Mrs. G. and her novels a Cornhill Magazine-ban 1874). Magyarul megjelentek: Cranford, ford. Belényesi Gy. (Budapest (1884); Phillis unokahugom, ford. Huszár Imre (Pest 1867).
