Dyer
Dyer (ejtsd: dájer), 1. János, angol költő, született Aberglaslynban (Caermarthen) 1700., megh. Coningshyban 1759 jul. 24. Westminsterben tanult, azután ügyvéd, majd festő lett. 1727. jelent meg Grongar Hill c. költeménye. Mivel Olaszországban tartózkodása idején belátta, hogy nincs művészi tehetsége, hazájában visszatért, belépett az egyházi rendbe és jövedelmező plébániához jutott. Egyéb művei: The fleece (1758, a pamut költői dicsőítése, Vergilius Georgicon-jának utánzata) és The ruins of Rome (1740). Költeményeinek gyüjteményét Poems cimen (London 1761); ujabban Willmott (u. o. 1853) és Gilfillan (u. o. 1858) adták ki.
2. D. Tamás Henrik, antol történetiró, szül. Londonban 1804 máj. 4. Eleinte kereskedő volt. Sokat utazott Rómában, Pompejiben és Athenben antiquáriusi és topográfiai kutatások céljából. Művei: Life of Calvin (1850); History of modern Europe (1877, 5 köt.); Ancient Rome, its vicissitudes and monuments (1883); History of the city of Rome (1865); Pompeji, its History, buildings and antiquities (1875); History of the kings of Rome (1868); Ancient Ahtens, its history, Topography and remains (1873); Imitative art (1883). Sok adalékot nyujtott a Classical Museum, valamint Smith: Dictionaries of biography and geography számára is stb.
