Dawson János Vilmos, sir, kanadai természettudós, szül. Pictouban 1820.; Edinbourgban tanult s a geologiára adta magát. Több európai és amerikai tudós társaság tagja. Munkái: Archaia or Saudies on the Cosmogony (1858); Acadian Geology (1868); Devonien and Carboniferrus Flora; The Story of the Earth and Man (ebben a Darwin-féle teoriát igyekezett megdönteni; 1872); The Dewn of life (1875); The origin of the World (1877); The Change of Life in geol. Times (1880). Ő fedezte fel a kanadai eozoont, egy ős-állatot.
