Crawfurd
Crawfurd (ejtsd: kráförd) János, angol orientalista és etnologus, szül. Islay szigetén, Skótországban 1783., meghalt Londonban 1868. Mint orvos ment 1803. Kelet-Indiába. 1811. Résztvett abban az expedicióban, amelyet Jáva elfoglalására küldtek ki. A szigeten gyüjtötte az anyagot: History of the Indian archipelago (Lond. 1820, 2. Köt.) c. nagy művéhez. 1817-21. Angliában volt, azután Sziamba és Kokhinkhinába küldték követségbe. 1823-26 Szingapur kormányzója, azután angol követ volt Birmában. 1827-ben végleg visszaköltözött Angliába. Megjelent tőle még: Journal of an embassy to the courts os Siam and Cochinchina (1821); Journ. Of an emb. To the courts of Ara (1827); Grammar a. dictionary of the Malay language (1852); Descriptive dictionary of the Indian islands (1856).
