Crawford and Balcarres (ejtsd: kráfförd and belkasz) Sándor Vilmos, Crawford Lindsay earl (más néven lord Lindsay), a tudomnyok tekintélyes előmozdítója Angolországban, termékeny és sokoldalu iró, szül. 1812 okt. 16., megh. Firenzében 1180 dec. 13. Az etoni Trinity-Collegeben nyerte kiképeztetését s ugyanott 1833. Magiszterré avattatott. Atyja C. Jakab haláláig a lord Lindsay nevet viselte. Edom and the Holy Land (1838); A letter to a friend on the evidence and theory of Chirstianity (1841); Progression by antagonism (1846); Ballads, songs and poems (1841); Sketches of the history of Christian art (legujabb kiadás 1885); Scepticism, a retrogressive movement in theology and philosophy (1861); Lives of the Lindsays (1840); On the theory of the english hexameter (1862); Oecumenicity in relation to the church of England (1870); Etruscan insciptions (1872); The earldom of Mar (1882). 1874. Saját költségén expediciót szervezett Mauritusba a Venus átvonulásának megfigyelmésére; 1876., miután Poems and poetical fragments c. a. már adott ki verseket, Argo, on the quest of the Golden Fleece c. alatt 10 énekes hőskölteményt irt. The religion of Noah c. műve befejezetlen maradt. Nagy feltünést keltett 1881 májusában az az eset, hogy bebalzsamozott holttestét ellopták s csak 1882 jul. találták meg a dunechti erdőben. A lopás okát maig sem derítették ki. C.-nek gyönyörű magánkönyvtára volt, melyet Bland hires orientalista gyüjteményével szaporított.
