Cowell (ejtsd: kauel) Eduárd Byles, angol orientálista, szül. Ipswichben 1826 jan. 23. Oxfordban tanult, 1856. Kalkuttába ment, hol 1864-ig a Presidency College tanára volt. 1867-től a cambridgei egyetemen a szanszkrit nyelv tanára.
