First and Second Military Survey: Grossfürstenthum Siebenbürgen, 1:28.800 - georeferenced, synchronized

System: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP

This DVD contains the Transylvanian sheets of the first and second military surveys of the Habsburg Empire. 280 map sheets were completed during the first survey, between 1769 and 1773. The second military survey was carried out between 1853 and 1873 and resulted 294 map sheets covering Transylvania. The scale of both surveys was 1:28 800.
The sheets of both surveys are published here in georeferenced and mosaicked form. The error of the georeference is, in case of the projectionless first survey with no geodetic basis, reaches few kilometers. The Cassini-projected second survey is much more precise; the error of the georeference remains below 200 meters. The newly developped quick viewer software shows the sheets synchronized (the same area on the first and second surveys), exports a selected mosaic to GIS packages, measures distances, etc.
Besides the maps, some scientific works, texts and papers are provided (in Hungarian, English, German and Romanian languages), concerning the history and the technology of the military surveys and also the used georeferencing methods.
