Propontis
Propontis, η Προποντις (vagyis az előtenger; m. Marmara Tenger), az a tengeröböl, a mely Ny.-on a Hellespontus és K.-en a Thraciai Bosporus által a Pontus Euxinus taz Aegaeus Tengerrel összeköti. Herodotus (4, 85) meglehetős helyesen 1400 stadiumra (= 258 km.) becsüli hosszát, 500r-a (92 km.) szélességét. D.-i partján van a Cianus (m. Indsir limán) és az Olbiai v. Astacusi (m. iszmidi) tengeröböl. Nevezetes városok, mint Byzantium (m. Konstantinápoly), Cyzicus, Calchedon, Nicomedia,Bisanthe (Rhaedestus, ma Rodosto), Heraclea (Perinthus) voltak partjain; szigetei pedig: Ophiusa, Elaphonesus, Proconnesus, Besbicus stb.
